Hurricane Floyd September 1999

Hurricane Floyd was a very powerful category 4 Atlantic hurricane that formed in September of 1999. Floyd reached peak intensity while passing through the Bahamas with sustained winds of 155 mph and central pressure of 921mb . Floyd was responsible for 73 deaths 51 of those deaths occurred in North Carolina . Floyd made landfall as a category 2 hurricane in North Carolina bringing historic flooding to the state .

Two weeks prior to Floyd making landfall hurricane Dennis brought up to 15 inches of rain to eastern North Carolina. Therefore when Floyd made landfall the flooding situation was escalated by upwards of 20 inches of additional rain.

Floyd damaged upwards of 56,000 homes across North Carolina. It's estimated that Floyd caused over 4 billion dollars of damage in North Carolina alone . Floyd didn't stop after making landfall in North Carolina. Major flooding and power outages impacted the Mid Atlantic through the Northeast into Canada .
